The dollar came under heavy selling pressure across the board Thursday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke snuffed out expectations that U.S. monetary tightening may be on the cards soon.

The bearish dollar sentiment during European trading hours benefited the euro. The single European currency reached its highest level since December 2009 at $1.4882.
