Background

Once Russia’s richest man, imprisoned Russian tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky has been convicted in two separate trials in Russia of evading taxes and stealing oil from his own company and laundering the proceeds. He is due for release in 2014.

His case is seen as President Vladimir Putin’s punishment for Khodorkovsky’s political ambitions and support for the opposition.

The European Court of Human Rights has said that Russia unfairly charged Khodorkovsky huge tax arrears, and unfairly sent him to a far-away penal colony in eastern Siberia to serve his sentence, thousands of miles from his family.

Pavel Khodorkovsky says he is optimistic that his father will be released from jail in August of next year. His son Pavel Khodorkovsky said the Russian government had many new pressing issues to deal with and releasing his father "would not necessarily be the worst thing for them to do"

Mikhail Khodorkovsky has been freed, bringing an end to more than a decade behind bars after the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, signed a decree pardoning him.

Putin made the surprise announcement on Thursday that he planned to pardon the country's former richest man, who is regarded by Kremlin critics as a political prisoner. On Friday morning the Kremlin said the decree had been signed. By lunchtime, Khodorkovsky had left the prison camp in northern Russia where he was serving his sentence, his lawyer said. "He has left the [prison] colony. That's all I can say," Vadim Klyuvgant told Reuters.

President Vladimir Putin says he will pardon jailed oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky after more than a decade in prison.

Putin told reporters after his marathon news conference Thursday that Khodorkovsky submitted an appeal for pardon and he intends to grant it.

He says that Khodorkovsky has "spent more than 10 years in prison. It's a serious term."

He adds that he will be granted pardon "in the nearest time."
