Winning option:Samsung Tech giant Samsung finally announced its long-rumored Galaxy Gear smartwatch at a trade show in Berlin on Wednesday, kicking off what will likely be a tech battle over consumers' wrists.

The smartwatch will launch in October, and be available in six colors. It includes a 1.63-inch AMOLED screen, a camera that appears on the watch band, and 4 GB of storage space. Several apps will appear, including Path, Pocket, Snapchat and others.

Background

Next year's crop of smart devices are expected to mark a considerable advancement over the current standard in the segment. Right now, Sony leads the industry with regard to device capabilities, but even its most recent model will likely be outstripped should the rumors surrounding forthcoming devices prove true.

Currently, smart watches like Sony's - and the device made by Pebble - largely function as a means of remotely interacting with one's smartphone: displaying messages, controlling music, and so forth. The next generation, though, may leverage a battery of sensors and low-power wireless technology to not only interact with the wearer's smartphone, but also his body.

Apple is widely expected to be working on an "iWatch" device some say could be revealed within the next year. Microsoft is rumored to be working on its own device, one that would complement that company's Surface devices. Google, too, is said to be testing an Android-powered smart watch. Likewise, chief Apple rival Samsung has already confirmed that it is looking to bring out a watch as part of its forthcoming "Gear" line of wearable electronics.

Tech giant Samsung is said to be getting ready to release its smartwatch device, called Galaxy Gear, early next month. If that's the case, Samsung will be the first among its peers to bring a smartwatch to market.

Competitors including Apple, Google and Microsoft are rumored to be working on smartwatch devices of their own. Apple, for instance, was said to be on a "hiring spree" last month ahead of the expected release of its "iWatch" sometime next year.

Citing a pair of people familiar with the device, Bloomberg.com reported today that the Galaxy Gear will be released on Sept. 4, two days before the IFA consumer electronics show kicks off in Berlin. While pricing is still a mystery, Bloomberg said Samsung's smartwatch will be powered by Google's Android operating system and is expected to go on sale this year.

Galaxy Gear release date rumors are ramping up now that Bloomberg News has reported that Samsung Electronics could be introducing the smartwatch that can "make phone calls, surf the Web and handle e-mails" as early as next month.

The Galaxy Gear release date could be unveiled Sept. 4, during the Samsung Unpacked 2013 event, two days before the IFA consumer electronics show begins in Berlin. Samsung's Galaxy Gear will be powered by Google's Android operating system. The fact that Samsung's Smartwatch will reportedly go on sale this year means that it will probably beat Apple's iWatch to market.

Samsung will unveil its Gear smartwatch alongside its Galaxy Note 3 phablet at the IFA trade show in September, according to a report.

Patently Apple claims that the South Korean firm is fast-tracking the wearable device to market in a bid to give it a head start on Apple's rumoured iOS watch.
