Background

Carlos Sainz (VW Touareg) will again contest the 2011 Dakar Rally together with navigator and fellow Spaniard, Lucas Cruz.

Since Cruz became co-driver in the 2009 season the duo has been unbeaten in four consecutive rallies - including victory in the 2010 Dakar Rally.

Sainz, a former World Rally Champion, is reluctant to define one specific stage of the 2011 Dakar Rally as 'special'.

"Compared to the stages in Africa it is the variety of the terrain in South America that impresses me the most," confesses the Madrilenian.

Al-Attiyah takes Dakar Rally lead

Qatari driver Nasser Al-Attiyah took the overall race lead after winning the eighth stage of the Dakar Rally, a 508km special on a 776km run through the Atacama desert from Antofagasta to here on Monday.

The Volkswagen driver, runner-up last year, finished 6min 36sec ahead of teammate and defending champion Carlos Sainz from whom he takes the overall race lead following a battle through the lunar landscape of one of the driest places on earth.
