Background
A pervy prowler is preying on young Broadway hopefuls, breaking into the dorm rooms of a prestigious Upper West Side performing-arts school and stroking the hair of one shocked student as she slept.
“He was literally petting my hair,” said Alia Callens, 18, who woke at 6:30 a.m. on Oct. 7 to see the freaky fetishist hovering over her bed on the third floor of the residence hall at 207 W. 85th St.
“He said his name was Jack and he lived upstairs, but I’ve never seen him. I was talking to him, trying to get him to leave. Then he was unzipping his pants and I was, like, ‘Um, sir, get away from me!’ ”
Callens called a building manager, who alerted cops from the 20th Precinct. They believe he got in through an unlocked door to a fire escape at the back of the building, but police found no video of him sneaking around and have not compiled a sketch.
They think the same man burst into the dorm room of another student 30 minutes earlier, said Callens, who spoke to the woman after the break-in.
The man also snatched cash from four roommates during a September break- in, students said.
The victims are all members of the American Musical and Dramatic Acad-emy, which was launched in 1964 and is the alma mater of actors Paul Sorvino and Gretchen Mol.
Students described the stalker as a 5-foot-7 white man, about 25, with brown hair, medium build and light beard stubble. Callens said he was wearing a blue hoodie, jeans and sneakers.
The break-ins left students worried.
“The hair thing is scary,” said one. “People have seen the guy around but nobody knows who he is.”
“I was pretty angry,” said Callens, who spoke to police about the intruder and plans to meet with a detective tomorrow when she returns from her home near Atlanta.
A group of students from Spain said the building installed cameras on each floor last week and have been carefully checking the IDs of anyone who comes in.
School security director John Guariglia wouldn’t comment.
Callens, a musical-theater student who arrived in June, says her upsetting encounter with the stalker hasn’t dampened her ambition to become a star.
“That’s the plan,” she said. “I love New York -- it’s so much fun.”
