Winning option:Franck RibÃ©ry (FRA) Bayern Munich's French winger Franck Ribery on Thursday won the award for European player of the 2012/13 season.

The France international becomes the third player to win the award, the two previous winners being Barcelona duo Lionel Messi (2011) and Andres Iniesta (2012).

Ribery won the award this time around ahead of Messi and Real Madrid's Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo.

Background

Four players from FC Bayern MÃ¼nchen are on the ten-man shortlist for the 2012/13 UEFA Best Player in Europe Award.

Born out of an initiative of UEFA President Michel Platini, and intended to revive the spirit of the old European Footballer of the Year honour and run in partnership with the European Sports Media (ESM) group, the award will be handed out for the third time in Monaco on Thursday 29 August during the UEFA Champions League group stage draw.

The top ten players overall advance to a second vote by the jury to determine the three ultimate award contenders â€“ to be revealed on UEFA.com on Tuesday 6 August. This trio then proceed to the live vote in Monaco at the end of August, when the same journalists will use an electronic system to determine the winner from the three anointed candidates.

Lionel Messi (2011) and his FC Barcelona team-mate AndrÃ©s Iniesta (2012) claimed the first two awards although only the Argentinian is in the running this time.

A shortlist of Europeâ€™s 10 best players has been whittled down to three.

And usually when Lionel Messiâ€™s involved, heâ€™s the clear winner for just about every single award going. Even the European tiddlywinks champion is cursing the diminutive Argentinian magicianâ€¦

However, this year Messi has some real competition to be named European Player of the Year. An award ceremony will be held on August 29 to see if Messi, Franck Ribery or Cristiano Ronaldo will lift the coveted title of Europeâ€™s top player.
