Winning option:After August Fidel Castro has criticised a claim in a Russian newspaper that his country buckled to US pressure and blocked the former NSA contractor Edward Snowden from travelling through Cuba to exile in Latin America.

Snowden, who is wanted in the US for leaking details of US government surveillance programmes, had planned to fly to Havana from Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport a day after arriving from Hong Kong, on 23 June.

But Snowden, who eventually accepted a year's asylum in Russia after spending nearly six weeks at Sheremetyevo, did not show up for the flight, although he had been allocated a seat.

Predictions

Background

A contractor at the National Security Agency who leaked details of top-secret U.S. surveillance programs dropped out of sight in Hong Kong on Monday, ahead of a likely push by the U.S. government to have him sent back to the United States to face charges.

Edward Snowden, 29, who provided the information for published reports last week that revealed the NSA's broad monitoring of phone call and Internet data from large companies such as Google and Facebook, checked out of his Hong Kong hotel hours after going public in a video released on Sunday.

In Washington, several lawmakers called for the extradition and prosecution of the ex-CIA employee behind one of the most significant security leaks in U.S. history. Members of the U.S. Congress said they would be briefed on the topic on Tuesday; the U.S. Justice Department is in the initial stages of a criminal investigation.

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange said Wednesday that his group has been in touch with Edward Snowden’s legal team, the man who says he’s behind the National Security Agency leaks.

“We are in touch with Mr. Snowden’s legal team and have been, are involved, in the process of brokering his asylum in Iceland,” Assange said on a conference call with reporters marking his one year since entering the Ecuadoran embassy in London seeking asylum.

The NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden vowed to fight an expected move by the US to have him extradited from Hong Kong in a new interview published on Wednesday.

In his first comments since revealing his identify in the Guardian at the weekend, Snowden told the South China Morning Post that he was not in Hong Kong to "hide from justice" and would put his trust in its legal system.

He also claimed that the US had been hacking Hong Kong and China since 2009, and accused the US of "bullying" the territory to return him because it did not want local authorities to learn of its cyber activities.
