Amanda Knox was found guilty of murder today by an Italian court, the latest twist in a murder case that goes back to 2007.

The verdict reached by the two judges and six jurors came after several hours of deliberations at the Florence courthouse.

The judge sentenced Knox to 28 years in prison. Her former Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito and co-defendant was sentenced to 25 years.

Background

Italy’s highest court on Tuesday ordered a new trial in the sensational case of Amanda Knox, an American exchange student accused of murdering her 21-year-old roommate, Meredith Kercher of Britain, in 2007.

The decision opened a further tangled and dramatic chapter in a long-running case whose youthful protagonists, sometimes lurid detail and courtroom spectacle have fascinated many people in the United States, Britain and the rest of Europe.

The Court of Cassation rules on questions of procedure, not on the merits of a case or the presumption of guilt or innocence.

If the new appeals court upholds the previous conviction and the Court of Cassation confirms it, Ms. Knox would have to serve out her sentence. Italian authorities would have to authorize an extradition request and the United States Justice Department would have to approve it.

Defense lawyers for U.S. student Amanda Knox and her Italian former boyfriend get their final say in the defendants' third trial for the gruesome 2007 murder of Knox's British roommate.

The prosecution will also make their final rebuttals Monday, the last hearing day scheduled in the trial ahead of the verdict later this month. Judge Alessandro Nencini specified each team will get 30 minutes for their last word so that deliberations can start as planned Jan. 30.

Prosecutor Alessandro Crini has demanded 26 years for each defendant for the murder, and that the court increase to four years Knox's three-year sentence for slander. The two were freed on appeal in 2009, but Italy's highest court ordered a second appellate trial after blasting the acquittal

A lawyer urged an Italian appeals court on Monday to convict Amanda Knox of murdering British student Meredith Kercher and denounced as "unbearable" that the American was soliciting donations in Kercher's memory.

Francesco Maresca, in his closing arguments on behalf of the Kercher family in the third trial of Knox and co-defendant Raffaele Sollecito, urged the eight lay jurors on the panel of 10 to disregard publicity over the case as well as Knox's own statements, including her criticism of Italy's judicial system.

An Italian prosecutor on Tuesday demanded that an appellate court find Amanda Knox guilty of the 2007 murder of her British roommate and sentence her to 26 years for the killing.

Prosecutor Alessandro Crini made the demand after more than 10 hours of closing arguments over two days during which he argued that Knox and her co-defendant Raffaele Sollecito acted in concert with a third man, who was convicted separately, in an explosion of violence sparked by tensions between the roommates over cleanliness.

A family spokesman said that Amanda Knox, who is living in Seattle, will not return to Italy for a retrial in the 2007 death of her British roommate.

The family spokesman, David Marriott, said Knox did not agree to attend and there is no requirement she be there.

Italy could request her extradition from the United States, CNN said, but it is not clear whether the United States would extradite Knox.

Knox spent several years in prison in Italy, after she was convicted of killing 21-year-old Meredith Kercher, an exchange student.
