Syrian leader Bashar al Assad has been ruling Syria with an iron fist much as his father Hafez Assad did before him. Many world powers such as the USA, UK, France, and the Arab League have urged him to step down. China and Russia are supporters of Assad- as the Assad Government has continued to violently crack down on protesters the anti-government cause to overthrow the Assad Regime has been bolstered.
