The Ryder Cup is an event which competes the best European golfers against the best American golfers. This year they play in the United States at Medinah near Chicago. The golfers play in three types of formats.
Foursome Competition consists of four golfers, two from each team, who share a ball and hit alternating shots. The team with the lowest score wins that individual hole and earns one point. 18 holes are played. The match can end in a tie and often does. The match can also end early if one team has a lead greater than there are holes left to play.
Fourball Competition is played with each golfer in the group hitting his own ball. The golfer shooting the lowest score wins that hole for his team. If no one shoots a lower number then they tie and the hole is halved.
Individual Competition is one golfer compeating against another single golfer in match play format.
