Background

NEW YORK -- The NFL and its on-field referees union failed to reach an agreement when they met Saturday, and the league said it's proceeding with replacement officials.

The NFL locked out the referees in early June, then hired replacements, whose work in exhibition games has been heavily criticized.

"We met with the NFL this morning and discussed various potential solutions to reach a new collective bargaining agreement," Michael Arnold, lead negotiator for the NFL Referees Association, said in a statement. "Unfortunately, we were unable to reach any agreement."

Commissioner Roger Goodell was among the league officials involved in Saturday's session.

"Commissioner Goodell and other NFL staff members concluded three days of talks today with representatives of the NFLRA without reaching an agreement," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said. "No further talks are scheduled. We are proceeding with the replacement officials."

In 2001, the NFL used replacements for the first week of the regular season.

Minnesota: The Vikings acquired cornerback A.J. Jefferson from the Arizona Cardinals for a conditional draft pick in 2013. In adding the 24-year-old Jefferson, the Vikings continued their approach of adding youthful depth to a rebuilding roster.

New England: The Patriots acquired receiver Greg Salas from St. Louis, claimed offensive lineman Matt Tennant off waivers from New Orleans, and released linebacker Bobby Carpenter. Salas, 24, was drafted by St. Louis in the fourth round in 2011 out of Hawaii, and New England surrendered an undisclosed draft pick for him. He played six games for the Rams last season, finishing with 27 receptions for 269 yards.

Seattle:
Kellen Winslow Jr. was acquired by the Seahawks in the hopes that along with Zach Miller the duo could become a formidable set of tight ends who could add another element to the offense. Those plans drastically changed when Winslow was released Saturday, a surprise move. A team spokesman confirmed Winslow's release after it was first reported by ESPN.com. Winslow was scheduled to make $3.3 million in base salary in 2012, following his trade from Tampa Bay to Seattle in May. Even with knee problems in the past, he was expected to be a significant contributor. Though he didn't have much impact during exhibition games, finishing with three catches for 34 yards and a touchdown.
