Background

Former NBA star Dennis Rodman was sentenced Tuesday to more than 100 hours of community service on four counts of failing to pay child support.

The sentence handed down by an Orange County court commissioner also requires Rodman to pay current child and spousal support obligations by the end of October. The 2011 NBA Hall of Fame inductee -- who played for the Detroit Pistons, San Antonio Spurs, Chicago Bulls, LA Lakers and Dallas Mavericks -- smiled as he walked into court Tuesday morning.

"It's a beautiful day," Rodman said. "Like I always said, it's all about the kids. This has nothing to do with anything between me and my ex-wife."

Rodman lived in Orange County, where he was known for throwing parties at his Newport Beach home, before moving to Florida. He married ex-wife Michelle in 2003.

She filed for divorce a year later. Since then, the couple has feuded over custody and support of their two children, ages 10 and 11.

Rodman was found guilty of the counts of contempt last year for child support owed in 2009 and 2010. He was sentenced Tuesday to 104 hours of community service.

"My suggestion is to use your talents as a motivator, as a fine, fine athlete and as a fine person to assist others in need,'' Court Commissioner Barry Michaelson told the retired basketball player.

Rodman played one season with the Lakers, but he gained a reputation as a defensive and rebounding force during his years with the Chicago Bulls and Detroit Pistons. He won two NBA Championships as a member of the Pistons and three as a Bull.

Rodman also attracted attention off the court. He dated Madonna, was breifly married to Carmen Electra.
