Background
COLUMBUS, Ga. —
Dozens of supporters of a former Russell County sheriff's deputy convicted of beating a handcuffed man are urging a federal judge to sentence him to probation instead of prison.
The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports (http://bit.ly/vAPUZF) Sunday that friends, family members and former colleagues of Tim Watford have written at least 82 character letters to be considered by U.S. District Judge Mark Fuller.
The judge is set to sentence Watford and former deputy Kirby Dollar on Friday for the November 2010 beating of Patrick Harrington in Smiths Station.
Dollar pleaded guilty in the beating and faces less than five years in prison under a plea deal. Watford went to trial, and jury convicted him after hearing from witnesses who said he choked, slapped and struck Harrington with a closed fist.
