Background

This is a month long question and will suspend on March 21, 2012.

Iran has threatened to close off the Straits of Hormuz which means that the surrounding countries will not be able to ship their oil to their western customers. Oil and gasoline prices would skyrocket. Iran is doing a lot of saber rattling lately and this is another event which could prove costly to the world.

Not only would closing the strait most likely spark a military response from the United States, it would also likely infuriate its Arab neighbors across the Gulf, thus further isolating itself.
