Background

Jodi Ann Arias, the California woman accused of brutally killing her ex-boyfriend, will face the death penalty when her case goes to trial later this year, an Arizona judge has decided.

Judge Sherry Stephens denied a defense motion Thursday in which defense lawyers requested the death penalty be removed as a punishment option for Arias. The 31-year-old photographer is accused of shooting her lover, Travis Alexander, in the face, stabbing him multiple times, and slitting his throat.

The defense had argued that Arias should not face death because she had not planned to kill Alexander. His death was an act of self-defense, her attorneys argued.

While Stephens denied the motion regarding the death penalty, she did grant a separate motion, prohibiting witnesses from hearing the testimony of other witnesses when the case goes to trial.

Alexander, a 30-year-old motivational speaker and insurance salesman from Mesa., Ariz., was found dead on June 9, 2008. Friends found Alexander's naked body inside his standup shower, and advanced decomposition suggested he had been dead for several days

The death penalty is off the table. The two other options are all that are left.

Thursday morning, they called it quits and Stephens declared a mistrial. Under Arizona law, Arias automatically will be sentenced by Stephens to life in prison. Arias' formal sentencing hearing has been scheduled for April 13. Stephens will decide whether she's eligible for release after 25 years.

The sentencing phase for Jodi Arias still hasn’t been decided on after an abrupt postponement earlier this month.

Jury selection for the sentencing phase was supposed to start on March 17. That date was set after months of hearings.

However, it came to light several weeks ago that prosecutor Juan Martinez, who is in charge of the Arias trial for the county, has a case that is slated to start on May 12.

Jodi Arias Trial Update Today: Is Jodi Arias Headed for a Settlement? Conference Scheduled for Oct. 24

Attorneys for Jodi Arias, who was convicted of first-degree murder on May 8 for the brutal death of Travis Alexander, announced that they have scheduled a settlement conference for October 24. Jodi Arias, her defense team and prosecutors will all meet to discuss a possible settlement.

It is not yet clear whether the latest wrinkle in the Jodi Arias trial is standard procedure or if an out of court deal might replace a retrial of the penalty phase.

According to her case calendar on the Maricopa County Superior Court website, Jodi Arias is scheduled to sit down in a settlement conference with prosecutors on Oct. 24. Lawyers for Jodi Arias have not disclosed what they will be talking about.

Jodi Arias is still awaiting sentencing, in a case that just won't freaking end, but now there is new news in her saga. Apparently the book and film adaptation of the book based on her story will be a highly sexualized romp--which is just what everyone wants, huh? Sex sells, and when a story is full of it, it will surely become a hit--but will this murderess's story be a one-night-stand, or a film you take home to momma?

Jodi begs for her life; how about Travis, I'm sure he begged for his life too, but did share have compassion? NO! Did she care what he has given to society and what more he could give? NO Will Travis' family be able to share holidays with him? NO! Is Jodi Arias sorry she killed Travis? NO The jurors will show her the same compassion as she has shown to Travis, however, her death will be painless, unlike the slaughter she bestowed upon Travis............rot in hell Jodi Arias!

The jury has rendered its verdict - Jodi Arias is guilty of first-degree murder - but the trial is far from finished.

The same jury now returns to the courtroom Thursday to decide whether she deserves to die for killing her one-time boyfriend on June 4, 2008 at his suburban Phoenix home. Arias spoke out about the verdict minutes after her conviction Wednesday, telling a TV station that she would "prefer to die sooner than later."

The next portion of the trial is called the "aggravation phase," and it will focus on whether the jury believes the crime was committed in an especially cruel, heinous and depraved manner. If jurors find the aggravators exist, the next step will be the penalty phase during which the panel will recommend either life in prison or death. The process could take several more weeks to wrap up.

(1)   Ross Fandey predicted gets death penalty

1) she lied to about the murder for 4 years constantly changing her story 2) she kept slamming the victim's reputation making her look like the victim 3) all of the medical tests done to show that she was mentally ill were shot down and 4) it's obvious she's guilty of 1st degree murder

A juror who has spent four months listening to tedious testimony in the Jodi Arias murder trial was dismissed today, just a week before the case goes to closing arguments.

The man known as Juror 8, who has taken copious notes throughout the trial and submitted several questions to witnesses on the stand, was dismissed today without comment by Judge Sherry Stephens.

He is the third juror to be dismissed from proceedings since the trial began in the Phoenix courtroom in January. Fifteen jurors will listen to the rest of the trial, and 12 will enter into deliberations.

In her sixth day on the stand, Arias tearfully described the sex-filled hours that led to Alexander's death on June 4, 2008. She is charged with murder for killing her former boyfriend, but claims she was forced to kill him self-defense. She could face the death penalty if convicted.

I just extended this question another 5 months until April 30, 2013.

She killed the man in June of 2008 and now the trial has been delayed again. Now jury selection is scheduled to start on Dec. 10. With the Christmas Holiday approaching and the chance that the jury may be sequestered the trial probably won't start until next year.

An Arizona judge has set a new trial date for Jodi Ann Arias, a California woman accused of brutally killing her ex-boyfriend.

The Huffington Post was the first to report last week that the would-be legal event of 2012, which was scheduled to start late next month, would likely be delayed due to a change in counsel.

Tuesday morning, Judge Sherry Stephens set Oct. 17 as the date jury selection will begin.

Originally slated to begin on Feb. 21, the trial has been delayed because Arias' lawyer, Victoria Washington, asked to withdraw from the case.

During today's case-management hearing, Stephens appointed Jennifer Willmott, a death penalty-qualified defense attorney, to represent Arias. Willmott will have roughly 10 months to get up to speed on the case.

Arias, a 31-year-old photographer from Yreka, Calif., is accused of killing her former lover, Travis Alexander.

A 30-year-old motivational speaker and insurance salesman from Mesa., Ariz., Alexander was found dead on June 9, 2008. Friends found Alexander's naked body inside his standup shower, and advanced decomposition suggested he had been dead for several days.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/03/jodi-arias-trial-update-murder_n_1181779.html
