Background

From http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/may/24/denmark-bans-marmite:

According to the advert, you either love it or hate it. As far as Marmite goes, the Danish government hates the stuff. That at least is the conclusion that many foreigners have drawn following a ban on the sticky brown yeast extract.

The sales ban enforces a law restricting products fortified with added vitamins. Food giant Kellogg's withdrew some brands of breakfast cereal from Denmark when the legislation passed in 2004, but until now Marmite had escaped the attention of Danish authorities.

"What am I supposed to put on my toast now?" asked British advertising executive Colin Smith, who has lived in the country for six years. "I still have a bit left in the cupboard, but it's not going to last long."

my last word. under transport in Wikipedia they quote the tax as 180% plus 25% VAT (not to be counted on) where do you live Bernardo. Anyone from Denmark??????

   cici

obviously I can't spell Google.

I knew today I would be challenged on that 120% tax, since I had spent about 2 hours reading about Denmark, a remarkable history. Of course, I couldn't find that specific article, so I Gppgled auto tax in Denmark today. 2 items, one from the NY Times in 2009, a story about Denmark raising the tax on gasoline powered cars to 200%. I have no idea if this ever happened. Then in 2 places, one Confederation Fiscal European, gave the tax rate as up to 76 400 DKK at 105%, surplus above that at 180%. If I remember, total electric cars are not subject to this tax, and are possibly tax free.

cici, where does that 120% tax story come from? If this were true, no cars would be sold in Denmark at all. As for the current Danish government: They don't seem to like foreigners very much and aren't quite on the front line of defending civil liberties. Banning a product which poses no threat to anyone's health is just one example.

My recollection about marmite (had it in NZ) is that it is like the old brewer's yeast they gave kids for their health, in the US..
I think it has lots of fishy type yeast.. B vitamins (and make sure you pronounce this properly)..

I have a friend who knew what Marmite was, said it was disgusting, and should be banned. What I found disgusting was the 120% tax on automobiles. Otherwise Denmark seemed ok. Always surprises when you look up other countries.

thanks for the question, you made me look up Marmite to find out what this evil foodstuff was. Now I have to look up the Government of Denmark. hope it's not evil too.
