Winning option:Mitt Romney Republicans made Mitt Romney their nominee for president on Tuesday afternoon, voting to install the former Massachusetts governor and Bain Capital chief executive as their standard bearer 14 months after he began his quest for the White House.

Assembled delegates from around the country nominated Romney in a roll call Tuesday afternoon, giving him 2,061 votes, more than the 1,144 votes required to claim the GOP mantle. Romney will formally accept the nomination in a speech on Thursday night.

Newt Gingrich has all but erased Mitt Romney's 23-percentage-point lead of a week ago among Republican voters nationally, and the two candidates are now essentially tied, at 29% for Romney and 28% for Gingrich. Ron Paul and Rick Santorum have significantly lower levels of support, at 13% and 11%, respectively.
