Background
The selection and appointment of President of the ECB has always caused heated arguments.
The ECB is the central bank for Europe's single currency, the euro. The ECB’s main task is to maintain the euro's purchasing power and thus price stability in the euro area.
The first President of the Bank was Wim Duisenberg, former president of the Dutch central bank and the European Monetary Institute.
Jean Claude Trichet took over the post in 2003, and his term expires on 31.10.2011.
Europe’s oddsmakers call Italy’s Mario Draghi the favorite to take over the European Central Bank. Associates of German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble call his qualifications undisputed.
