Background

The first leg of the Triple Crown is complete and the winner was California Chrome, in a thrilling race which he won at the very end. Does he have what it takes to be the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978?

The Triple Crown consists of three races, the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and The Belmont Stakes. Three horses won them in the 1970's, including the horse of all-time Secretariat, but none since then. Several have won the first two, but the longer Belmont seems to be the one that separates the truly great from the rest.

So does California Chrome have what it takes to join the greats? The next race may tell the story . . .

I think California Chrome is the best of a bad lot of 3 year olds. With the internal fractions of :48+ for four furlongs in the Derby and the Preakness he should have the kick to win the Belmont. Then again, they are only 3 yr. olds and this is a long race.

The Derby was too slow for California Chrome to make it to the finish line in 1st place . . . at least not in the Belmont . . . he might easily take the Preakness . . . few horses, shorter distance . . . but the Belmont will finish him off....
