Winning option:Sochi G8 cancelled and Russia evicted from G8 Russia was suspended from the G8 club of rich countries on Monday night as President Barack Obama promised to “impose a greater cost” on the Kremlin if the confrontation over Ukraine escalates.

The group of leaders retaliated for President Vladimir Putin’s annexation of Ukraine’s region of Crimea by agreeing to exclude Russia from their meetings. Mr Obama joined David Cameron and the leaders of France, Germany, Canada, Italy and Japan to impose the penalty.

However, they stopped short of permanently barring Russia from the top table of international politics, holding open the prospect of readmission if Moscow agrees to “abide by international rules”.

Until then, the G8 is effectively suspended and the world’s richest countries will meet as the G7.

Mr Putin’s plan to hold a showcase G8 summit in Sochi, the Winter Olympics host city, in June has now been cancelled. The G7 is to meet in Brussels instead.

Predictions

Background

Secretary of State John Kerry warned on Sunday that Russia risked eviction from the Group of 8 industrialized nations if the Kremlin did not reverse its military occupation of Crimea in Ukraine.

“He is not going to have a Sochi G-8,” Mr. Kerry said on the NBC program “Meet the Press,” referring to the meeting of the industrialized nations that President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia is to host in June. “He may not even remain in the G-8 if this continues.”

France's foreign minister cast doubt Tuesday on Russia's participation in the Group of Eight world powers because of its incursion into Crimea, saying the other members of the elite economic club are ready to meet without Moscow.

Other G-8 countries said that no decision has yet been made on Russia's future in the group. It's an especially sensitive question now, because Russia has the G-8's rotating leadership and is scheduled to host U.S. President Barack Obama and other leaders for a summit in Sochi in June.

Amid tensions between Russia and the West over Ukraine, the other members of the group — the U.S. Britain, Germany, Japan, France, Italy and Canada — had already suspended preparations for that summit.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius went further Tuesday, saying on Europe-1 radio that "concerning the G-8 ... we decided to suspend Russia's participation, and it is envisaged that all the other countries, the seven leading countries, will unite without

Russia."http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/france-russia-suspended-22951530
