Predictions

Background

David Miranda, the partner of Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald who published documents leaked by Edward Snowden, was held at Heathrow for nine hours on his way to Rio de Janeiro.

He reportedly had his mobile phone, laptop, DVDs and other items seized.

Mr Miranda was later released by British authorities.

Mr Greenwald called his partner's detention an "intimidation" and a "profound attack on press freedoms".

Under the Terrorism Act 2000, UK police can hold someone at an airport for up to nine hours - but the power must be used appropriately and proportionately and is subject to independent scrutiny.

Amnesty International says the incident shows the law can be abused for what it described as "petty and vindictive reasons".

The British government broke its silence Tuesday about the detention of a journalist’s partner for nine hours at Heathrow Airport, saying authorities “have a duty to protect the public and our national security.”

Police used a contentious anti-terrorism law to detain David Miranda, the partner of Guardian newspaper journalist Glenn Greenwald, on Sunday. Greenwald has published stories about U.S. and British surveillance programs based on documents leaked by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.

Media experts and watchdog groups in the U.S. and the U.K. were swift to criticize Miranda’s detention, calling it an attempt to frighten Greenwald and other journalists.

Glenn Greenwald, the reporter who broke the news about secret U.S. surveillance programs, said the authorities who took his partner into custody at London's Heathrow Airport "are going to regret what they did."

"I am going to write my stories a lot more aggressively now," the Guardian reporter told Brazil's Globo TV on Monday in Rio de Janeiro.

The White House knew the move was coming.

"There was a heads up that was provided by the British government," White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Monday.

So the United States knew it "was likely to occur, but it's not something that we've requested and it's something that was done specifically by the British law enforcement officials there," he said.
