Winning option:No/He died from other causes A Russian official said on Tuesday that forensic tests found no indications of polonium poisoning in the body of the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

“He could not have died of polonium poisoning - the Russian experts found no traces of this substance,” Vladimir Uiba, the head of Russia's Federal Medical-Biological Agency, told the Interfax news agency on Tuesday.

Background

Arafat became ill, fell into a coma and died on 11 November 2004 at the age of 75. While the exact cause of his death remains unknown and no autopsy was performed, his doctors spoke of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and cirrhosis. In July 2012, Swiss scientists told an al Jazeera TV documentary that levels of polonium, a rare, highly radioactive element, in quantities much higher than normal, were found in his personal items, suggesting possible poisoning.

Arafat's family has agreed to allow the body to be exhumed and tested.

From Reuters:

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat was poisoned to death in 2004 with radioactive polonium, his widow Suha said on Wednesday after receiving the results of Swiss forensic tests on her husband's corpse.

...

Professor David Barclay, a British forensic scientist retained by Al Jazeera to interpret the results of the Swiss tests, said the findings from Arafat's body confirmed the earlier results from traces of bodily fluids on his underwear, toothbrush and clothing.

"In my opinion, it is absolutely certain that the cause of his illness was polonium poisoning," Barclay told Reuters. "The levels present in him are sufficient to have caused death.

"What we have got is the smoking gun - the thing that caused his illness and was given to him with malice."

The late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat may have been poisoned with radioactive polonium, says a Swiss forensic report obtained by al-Jazeera.

Arafat's official medical records say he died in 2004 from a stroke resulting from a blood disorder.

But his body was exhumed last year amid continuing claims he was murdered.

The Swiss report said tests on the body showed "unexpected high activity" of polonium, which "moderately" supported the poisoning theory.

Many Palestinians and others have long believed that Israel poisoned Arafat. Others allege that he had Aids or cancer. Israel has consistently denied any involvement.

Swiss radiation experts have confirmed they found traces of polonium on clothing used by Yasser Arafat which "support the possibility" the veteran Palestinian leader was poisoned.

In a report published by The Lancet at the weekend, the team provide scientific details to media statements made in 2012 that they had found polonium on Arafat's belongings.

They popped him out of the ground. It should only be a few weeks now before we know. Radioactive poisoning should be pretty obvious to the ME's. 11/27/2012.

Palestinian authorities on Tuesday exhumed the remains of their late leader Yasser Arafat, overriding cultural taboos against disturbing a gravesite to determine with the help from foreign experts whether he was poisoned, as relatives and political successors have claimed.

On Tuesday morning, after several weeks of preparations, Arafat's remains were taken from his mausoleum in the West Bank city of Ramallah and moved to a nearby mosque, according to two Palestinian officials. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the exhumation with the media.

At the mosque, Palestinian physicians took samples from the remains and handed them to Swiss, French and Russian experts, the officials said. According to Islam, only Muslims can handle a Muslim's remains. The foreign experts will examine the samples in their home countries, the officials said. Earlier, samples were also taken from Arafat's bedroom, office and personal belongings, they said.

Work has begun to exhume the body of Yasser Arafat.

The Palestinian leader's mausoleum is in the Palestinian presidential compound in Ramallah.

Palestinian officials approved the move over the summer, after investigators said they found high levels of a radioactive substance on some of Arafat's personal belongings.

Criminal investigators from France are to exhume Yasser Arafat's remains next month in a bid to find out how the Palestinian leader died, a French official has said.

The official said on Tuesday that the team will arrive sometime between November 24 and November 26 in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
