Predictions

Background

An old photograph dating to 1937 has been rechecked and is believed to be the picture of Amelia Earhart's plane with the landing gear sticking out of the water. It is said to be on a reef on the Pacific atoll of Nikumaroro, formerly Gardner Island. On July 2nd Ric Gillespie, executive director of The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR), will depart Honolulu on a University of Hawaii research vessel to try to find that plane in the deep waters off a flat reef on Nikumaroro.

We will give them a chance to get there and about seven weeks to find the plane. It has probably long been knocked from the reef and is now in possibly thousands of feet of water.

Look at the pic here and read the CNN news story. It sounds very promising.

Early in July The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery originally called off their $2.2 million hunt for Earhart’s aircraft off Nikumaroro Island. They had found no real evidence to support their theory that the female pilot, and her navigator had made a crash landing there.f

However, after reviewing underwater camera footage, the researchers now believe they may have found a debris field with multiple objects "in a location where we had previously reasoned where airplane wreckage should be" including "the fender, possibly the wheel and possibly some portions of the strut."
