The Archbishop of Canterbury is the senior bishop and principal leader of the Church of England and the head of the worldwide Anglican Communion. The incumbent, Rowan Williams, is retiring from the position in 2012.
His successor will be appointed by the monarch of the UK - effectively it is the job of the Prime Minister to nominate the man for the job.
