Background

A referendum on EU accession of the Republic of Croatia is scheduled for 22 January 2012. Croatia finished accession negotiations on 30 June 2011 and signed the Treaty of Accession on 9 December 2011, setting it on course to become the bloc's 28th member state. The Constitution of Croatia requires that a referendum must be held on the issue of accession of Croatia to the European Union.

Public opinion polls have generally shown majority support among Croatians for entering the EU. See link below for details.

Pursuant to §87, paragraphs 4 and 5 of the Croatian Constitution, if more than 50% of voters who cast their ballots on January 22 vote in favor of the proposed accession, the proposal will pass and the result will be binding for the Parliament of Croatia. In that case, the Parliament of Croatia will be required to ratify the Croatian EU accession treaty.
