Jacobus Lose, But Still Champion

The fight between Universal Boxing Organizationâ„¢ World Super Middleweight Champion Kali Jacobus and Argentinean challenger Francisco Antonio Mora on December 31 in Espiritu Santo, Luganville, Vanuatu turned out to be a nightmare for everyone involved, and eventually ended up being a non-title bout when Mora decisively failed to make the required weight.

Jacobus weighed in at 74,3 kilos / 164 Lbs., well inside the 168 Lbs. Super Middleweight limit, but shockingly Mora failed to get lower than 81,3 kilos / 179 Lbs. Normally a UBO title fight can go ahead with the overweight boxer not being able to win the championship, but it is clearly stipulated in the organizations rules and regulations that:

…under no circumstances will the UBO participate in or sanction a bout for its title when one fighter is overweight; when there is a difference of more than 10 pounds between the two participants when the lighter of the two weighs more than 160 pounds and not more than 175 pounds.

Jacobus gamely agreed to go ahead with the fight anyway, despite giving away fifteen Lbs. and literally fighting a Cruiserweight, knowing that the promoters would lose massive amounts of money if he didn’t, and that his fans would be terribly disappointed if the fight was cancelled.

Unfortunately Jacobus was not rewarded for his amazing professionalism. The extra weight gave a motivated Mora too much advantage, and his significant power was a problem for Jocobus from early on. After suffering knockdowns in rounds two, five and six, Jacobus was eventually stopped in round seven after showing a true champion’s heart.

UBO rules state that when a champion loses a non-title bout, the UBO reserves the right to declare the title vacant. Under the circumstances, the UBO choose to consider the fact that Jacobus lost to a boxer two weight classes heavier, and that he showed tremendous spirit and unselfishness in doing so.

Therefore, the title is not declared vacant and Kali Jacobus is still the UBO World Super Middleweight Champion!

Background

Universal Boxing Organizationâ„¢ World Super Middleweight Champion Kali Jacobus is set to make the third defense of his title on December 15 at Luganville, Esperito Santo, Vanuatu. “The Vanuatu Kid” will face Argentinean veteran Francisco Antonio “El Chino” Mora.

Jacobus (15-3, 11 KOs) won the UBO world title in 2009 against Thailand’s Plaisakda Singwancha (KO2), and has since made defenses against another Thai, Komgrit Nanakorn (W12), and Brazilian Rocky Junior (KO11).

Mora (55-17-1, 35 KOs), from Cordoba, Argentina, has fought some big names in his fifteen years long career, including the best middleweight in the world today, Sergio Martinez, who won a decision over Mora, former UBO Inter-Continental Champion Evans Ashira, former IBF World Champion Kassim Ouma, and former WBC World Champion Robin Reid.

A former two-time Argentinean champion, and former South American, WBA Inter-Continental and Fedelatin, and three time WBO Latino champion, “El Chino” challenged Raymond Joval for the IBO World Middleweight title in 2003 but lost on points.

Eight years later he will now get his second shot at a world championship.

• UBO Female International Featherweight Champion Agnesse Boza won a non title fight on December 10 at the Night Club Faraon in Riga, Latvia. Boza, originally from Armenia but now based in Riga, dominated Angelina Gulashjak for three rounds before Gulashjak had had enough and retired on her stool before the fourth.

A former WIBF World title-challenger, 29-year-old Boza is now 7-5 (4) and on a three fight winning-streak. Four of her five losses were against opponents who are currently world champions!

Boza captured the UBO title in July with a unanimous decision over Julija Cvetkova at the Jurmala Ice Hall.

• Another result: In case anybody missed it, UBO Inter-Continental Super Middleweight Champion Anthony Dirrell (24-0, 21 KOs) won his fight on December 2 in Santa Ynez, California.

Boxing live on Showtime television, Dirrell scored a fourth round TKO over Canadian Renan St. Juste (23-2-1, 15 KOs).

• UBO International Light Heavyweight Champion Zoltan Kiss Jr. (22-9-3, 6 KOs) was supposed to defend his title on December 17 in Erd, Hungary, but had to pull out about a week before the fight when he suffered a serious hand injury in training.

Kiss was told by his doctor that it could be up to three months before he can fight again, and his first UBO title defense is therefore on hold.

• Kali Jacobus (15-3, 11 KOs), the UBO World Super Middleweight Champion, also had a title defense postponed when his opponent Francisco Antonio Mora (55-17-1, 35 KOs) had travel complications. Jacobus vs. Mora was scheduled for December 15, but will now happen on December 29 instead.

• Besides taking care of business inside the ring this past Saturday (12.10), new UBO Inter-Continental Champion Roy Jones Jr. (55-8, 40 KOs) has time to do the same outside it too. Please check out www.royjonesjrchallenge.com – The UBO can recommend it!

• UBO World Lightweight Champion Mason Menard (17-1, 13 KOs) will return on January 6 at the Evangeline Downs Casino in Opelousas, Louisiana. Menard, who won the UBO world title this past August by stopping Joseph Laryea, will take on an opponent to be announced in a scheduled eight rounder.

It is the plan that he will make his first world title defense in early spring 2012.

• We wish a speedy recovery to UBO Inter-Continental Welterweight title Jo Jo Dan (29-2, 16 KOs) who broke his jaw in his fight against Selcuk Aydin on November 26.

Like the first time they fought (in June 2010), Dan lost a controversial and close decision which many felt he deserved to win. In any case it proved that Dan is true world class, and the UBO is proud to have him as one of our champions.
